Data assimilation for Mars: an overview of results from the Mars Global Surveyor period, proposals for future plans and requirements for open access to assimilation output

چکیده
The Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) aboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) has produced an extensive atmospheric data set, both during the initial aerobraking hiatus and later from the scientific mapping phase of the mission which lasted almost three complete Martian seasonal cycles. Thermal profiles for the atmosphere below about 40 km, and total dust and water ice opacities, have been retrieved from TES spectra (Conrath et al., 2000; Smith et al., 2000). These data have been analysed by assimilation into a Mars general circulation model (MGCM), making use of a sequential procedure known as the analysis correction scheme (Lorenc et al., 1991), a form of the successive corrections method which has proved simple and robust in trial studies with artificial data under Martian conditions (Lewis et al., 1996, 1997).

The Thermal Emission Spectrometer aboard the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft has produced an extensive atmospheric data set, beginning during aerobraking and continuing throughout the extended scientific mapping phase. The works carried out during the first year of my DPhil project are presented in this report. The objective of this project is to make use of a unique and advanced data assimilation system that enables the combining of observational data with predictions from a global numerical model of the Martian atmospheric circulation. In this report, an introduction to the planet Mars and a brief descripti...
متن کاملAtmospheric tides in a Mars general circulation model with data assimilation
The prominence of thermal tides in the Martian atmosphere has long been recognized, through classical theory, models and observations, including surface pressure records from the Viking and Mars Pathfinder Landers. A unique record of observations over more than two Martian years is now available from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, although since the spacecraft is Sun-synchronous it is dif...
متن کاملThermal Tides in an Assimilation of Three Years of Thermal Emissionspectromenter Data from Mars Global Surveyor
Introduction. Thermal tides are particularly prominent in the Mars atmosphere with the result that temperature and wind fields have a strong dependence on local solar time (LT). Tides include westward propagating migrating (sun-synchronous) waves driven in response to solar heating and additional nonmigrating waves resulting from zonal variations in the thermotidal forcing. Zonal modulation of ...
